What do we do?

Education and literacy programme
Our goal is two-fold:
1.   To develop literacy programmes in the heart of each Riau caostal community.  We are achieving this through setting up learning centres which offer daily English and IT lessons in the villages.
2.   To help improve the quality of teaching and resources within the schools so the performance levels increase as well as to create awareness among the parents on the imporatnce of keeping their children in school.

The Island Foundation (TIF) has chosen to work with the coastal communities in East Binatn and the Riau Archipelago to help improve their income, health and education.

In doing so, TIF will address environmental concertns andimplement sustainable community-based projects centered on social justice, community organisation, micro-finance and entrepreneurialism.

All of these things are evident in the Riau Archipelago.  Singapore, as the northern most Riau Island, has many residents who can trace their roots back to Riau tradition, history and culture.  The rapid modernisation of Singapore has broken this historical connection, but at the same time provided a platform from which first worl skills, innovation and resources can be tapped into.

TIF has begun to buld a two-way bridge based on knowledge, skills, culture, tradition an dhistory between the islands of the Riau Archipelago, Singapore and the rest of the world.

TIF works in partnership with each target village, employing local villagers and helping them develop the skills with which to take control of their lives and develop a sustainable path out of poverty.
TIF believes that poverty alleviation / eradication is the correct long-term goal, in its own right, and because so many other issues flow from it in  terms of poor education, sub-standard health care, low environmental standards, lack of economic opportunity and fixed local hierarchies.
Village Development
The Village Development Programme (VDP) aims to create sustainable economic development and self-reliance among coastal villages in the Riau Archipelago.  TIF is aiming to develop VDPs with a unique approahce to community empowerment and ending poverty.  The VDP addresses five key areas: community empowerment, economic development, environment, health and education.  The key to village improvement is through idea generation and the establishment of a clear and strong sense of ownership that persevere beyond the sponsor's initial investment.

Marine Conservation
This programme aims to address the specific challenges of marine pollution, falling fish stocks, disenfranchised subsistence fishing communities and a lack of awareness of marine conservation.  TIF has begun to engage the local subsistence fishing community to develop innovative programmes that showcase their indigenous knowledge of marine management and conservation as well as to create a solid consensus on the protection and management of cora reefs, mangroves, sea grass and around other marine issues.
